Audio Systems: car stereo/speakers, car stereo speakers, alpine equipment

Question
Hi,
Approximately two years ago I bought a brand new stereo for my car, 1988 Honda Accord, which includes a new deck, subs, amp, and speakers. It is all alpine equipment except the speakers which are phoenix gold. Now at the time when I bought it I installed it all myself as I know enough to do this. The stereo worked fine for the two years but recently in the last month or so I have been having problems with the sound from my speakers. At first I thought it was the wiring to the speakers which is the only thing I left that was factory from the car for the system, so I replaced it all. Unforunately, that didn't fix the problem. What is occurring is that if I keep the system volume low I will get no sound but if I turn it up louder I will briefly get sound but it will go away again in a second or two. The subs and everything else works fine I'm not getting any power shortages or anything and I have checked all the fuses as well. I am totally stumped as to what would be causing this other than some interference that is causing it or something possibly wrong with the deck. I don't think it is the deck b/c everything else is working fine on it. Also the speakers are working cause I can hear a static sound in them the entire time and I also checked them in another car to make sure they are fine. So I have no clue what else could be wrong. Please let mw know what you think it could be.

Answer
Kris,
The problem may be due to the amp/s inside the head unit failing, or the external power amp is failing. You may want to try using a 12 volt test lamp and monitor/test the remote turn on lead and the main power feed to the amp to see what they do when you turn up the volume.
