My problem is when i just purchase car(1993 nissan maxima) with a bose cassette player and system.  when i first turned it on it played fine just for a little bit then it shut off and then i can't turn it on anymore it seems like there is no more power to it. i asked the previous owner he said it had something tho do with the first or second relay?(or something like that) i just wanted to know if that could or most likely be the problem and if so. what is a relay and how do i fix it?  Thank you very much for your time and expertise.

Eddie,
Some vehicles that have high powered stereos in them will use a relay that is switched with the key to send 12 volts to the stereo. You may want to test the connector going into the rear of the stereo with a test lamp for 12 volts on the main power lead and on the station memory lead. A Nissan dealer should be able to give you a print out of the stereo connector. The relay if used on your vehicle may be located under the hood in the main fuse box. Note, these relays can be purchased at most auto parts outlets.

Thank you for your help
but one more ? is there anyway i can test out the relay? and how do i know if it is still good?

Answer
Eddie,
After you locate the  radio power relay you can use a 12 volt test lamp to check for 12 volts coming up to the relay and then going out of the relay when the stereo is on. The diagram for the relay contacts should be stamped on the relay.
