Audio Systems: Whining and popping car radio, mitsubishi montero sport, 2001 mitsubishi montero

Question
I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport Limited with 55,000 miles. A couple months ago the radio began picking up noise from the engine. It is a whining noise that raises with the RPM'S. My mechanic put a new noise supressor on the altenator. This worked for about 2 days then the noise returned. Then we replaced the altenator. Again this worked for about 2 days and the noise returned. Every once in a while I will hear a loud pop and the stereo will be clear again for a little while. I don't know what to try next. Please help!! Thank You. Todd.

Answer
Todd,
A popping noise indicates a possible loose ground connection. Check all the bolts for the alternator and any ground straps between the engine and fire wall. A noise filter on any alternator must be rated for the max amperage output of the alternator or the filter will fail in no time! You can also try running a ground wire from the case of the stereo to the fire wall. Also make sure to clean and tighten the antenna ground on the fender if your vehicle has a fender mounted antenna. Lastly, check the small ground wire from the battery to the fender if your vehicle has one. let me know what you find out.
