Steering Column Repair: broken ignition switch housing, ford steering column, steering column repair

Question
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer that was broken into. They broke off the ignition with a screw driver and did damage to the housing for the ignition. How do I replace/repair the housing and ignition? Are there detailed drawings or is it more cost effective to go to a mechanic?

Answer
Hi Albert:

Sorry about your truck.  You may have an antitheft system that prevented them from getting the vehicle.  If you do, you will ultimately need to tow the vehicle to Ford to have that system reprogrammed.  But for now and aside from that,  I can direct you to our company website for the information you are asking for.

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column (for a small fee).  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions with pictures. Although the example is for a 2000 Mustang, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply follow the links to the Ford Parts pages and select any of the parts you need.  We do provide a complete housing (Hsg20) on this page.

Feel free to email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally.  We stock and sell all of the parts you will need for this job.
Good luck

Doug
