Audio Systems: radio installation, antenna input, antenna booster

Question
Tom: I replaced the factory stereo on a 1996 Ford Ranger.  I used an installation kit and the specified wire harness.  The hook-up is complete, the CD player works fine, but the radio only gets one station on FM and none on AM.  Any ideas.

Thanks
Rick

Answer
Rick,
Check to be sure that the antenna plug is fully seated into the antenna input jack on the stereo. If this vehicle has a fender mounted antenna, with the stereo out of the dash use a meter to check the continuity of the antenna from the metal whip part to the plug tip. Also make sure that the antenna whip isn't shorted to ground. If these things check out OK, the stereo may be defective. Lastly, check to see if the original stereo used an antenna booster amp that could be up under the dash.
