Audio Systems: Simple questions for basic speaker installation, nissan maxima, stereo configuration

Hey , i have a 1987 Nissan Maxima . It's in perfect condition. everthing ( stereo wise) is the orginial stuff. The only thing new is the Stereo it self that i put in. I belive that my speakers are blown. See when i turn the volume up it make a crackling nosie. I need to just get a better sound in my car. I have no idea what i need some people tell me speakers , then an AMP . And with the speakers how many do u really need i see some with 2 ,5 or 6 speakers. My question is what do i need and why. i just like to know what i am doing before i do it. I am a young driver and this is my first car. i just want to make it my car sound a little better. Thanks,

The new stereo, is it an after market or a Nissan stereo? If you still have the original factory stereo give me all the numbers off the sticker on it so I can look up the original factory stereo configuration. The sound problem may be due to faulty speakers, or the vehicle may have an external amp the was used with the original stereo.
