My 2001 Nissan Maxima with stock Bose system (and steering wheel controls) has started to change radio stations on its own. This happens about once or twice in a 30 minute trip. It can simply move to the next preset or change from one mode to the next (first set of FM presets to second set of FM presets). Car is used in the Northeast (cold on start-ups), but can't pin the problem to cold or warmed-up condition. Car has 30,000 miles and has been well cared for.
TSB for O2 sensors (with reprogramed ECM) done very recently. Original battery is starting to show signs of age with slower cold cranking, otherwise everything works well.
Answer -
Jim,
On many stereos with redundant wheel controls the processor can become corrupted and this kind of problem can occur. You may want to try unplugging the wire to the steering wheel controls and see if the stereo will change presets still. If it does the head unit will need to be serviced.

Tom,
Thanks for your help.
Should I be looking for a multi-wire cable, or a single communication (serial) wire between controls and head unit? Will disconnecting the battery, and allowing the radio processor to restart, be of any use?
Regards,
Jim

Answer
Jim,
The wire to the steering wheel control will be a serial comm wire. Try unplugging it to see if the stereo will function without changing stations by itself. You can also try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to see if this helps by resetting the processor.
