OK, I just recently decided to get a new stereo to replace the factory GM stereo in my 03 GMC Sierra Z71.All was going all right until the installer at a local Best Buy said in order for me to enjoy my new stereo I would have to buy this wiring harness that costs 60+ dollars to reroute my Factory stereo to lay behind the seat. He said I would have to keep the Factory stereo powered so my air bags and chimes would work. After all this I would like to know if there is anything I can purchase to get rid of my factory stereo. Everything is working properly but there has to be something I can get to plug into the harness besides keeping my factory stereo. He said it was because it had the RDSS feature. It also amazes me that GM or anybody would route sensitive components through the stereo. Your help in this matter would be appreciated GREATLY.

Sincerely, Mark Mckay

Answer
mark,
The cost of the correct adapter is about $80, This adapter plugs into the factory harness and will allow the chime and other circuits to still function. Most good car stereo install shops should have access to the adapters. You won't have to keep the factory stereo connected. A new stereo may have the RDSS circuits in it.
