Audio Systems: Radio, vibration damage, solder connection

Question
I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee.  I was driving along one day and all of a sudden my FM didn't work.  All I got was static.  Every once in a while I can get maybe one station but most of the time I get nothing but static.  One day I flipped to FM and for some reason I could get all my channels again.  But when I turned the car off I lost all the FM again and I haven't had it back since.  I can get some AM stations but mostly just local stuff.  I don't know if it is the antenna or the radio.  I also don't know if I should try to repair this myself or take it somewhere.  What do you think.

Thanks,
Sam Neff

Answer
if you have access to another antenna i would try hooking it up just to see, but with suv's, you have the risk of vibration damage to the internal circuit board. it's almost always cheaper to replace than repair radios, unless it's an expensive unit. (just about all original equipment stereos are relatively cheapos. if you get the unit out and apart, you might get lucky, and all that's wrong is bad solder connection at antenna jack.  good luck, g........
