Audio Systems: Chrysler Infinity AM/FM doesnt work but CD/AMP OK, alpine electronics inc, antenna connection

Question
Hardware:  1994 Town & Country minivan
Chrysler Infinity audio system
AM/FM Single CD player in dash
    5 band equilzer
    Model no. 5269054
    Manufactured by Alpine Electronics Inc.

The in dash head powers up fine, all displays work OK.  The CD accepts a disk and will play it just fine.  When you switch to AM or FM there is no sound, not even background hiss.  The Scan control doesn't do anything either.  The display will show an AM or FM frequency and the TUNE will allow you to step up/down the band, there is just no output what-so-ever from the receiver.

I have seen this exact symptom listed on another Q/A website by a couple of folks.  But there wasn't any solution posted.  So it seems to be a common problem.

There is what appears to be a repair tag on one side of the head. It has a UPC scan code in the upper right corner with "USURS015393" in small letters under it.  The sections at the bottom of the tag are:   Date - 11/17/97  Tech - scribble
and Codes - 11/18/97.  All of the data was hand written in ink.

Since it is a '94 year vehicle I suspect a repair due to the '97 date.

I have read item pertaining to a "code" needing to be entered to make car radios work.  Is this perhaps an area I need to pursue for this problem?

I purchased the van third hand, the 2nd owner indicated that the radio poriton of the package hadn't worked for him, while he had the van.  So it was a known problem when I made the purchase.  I thought perhaps that the antenna connection was loose or broken.  I have pulled the main head unit from the dash and all cabeling seems fine.

Thanks for your time and experience..!!!!!

Answer
Pat,
First off, if an access code was needed to be entered, none of the stereo sections would be working! Most likely the problem is in the power supply area for the receiver front end section. Noise/hiss will come out of any receiver without having an antenna connected as long as the receiver section is working. Lets say that the receiver section was working in your stereo and the antenna was good, but you still didn't have any sound!, the scan button when pressed should cause the tuner to scan to the next strongest station and stop for a second (if the antenna was in good working condition)or so and then go to the next station and so on. Just to be sure that you don't have an antenna problem you may want to purchase one of those cheapo antennas from WalMart and plug it into the jack where the factory antenna is plugged into after pulling it out of the jack. Hold the antenna outside of the vehicle and then try the scan function. If after trying the new test antenna and you still don't have the radio function, Please contact me by direct Email for more details.
