Audio Systems: Turntable noise, phono section, tone arm

Question
I have a buzzing (not a hum)noise coming from my speakers when the amplifier is switched to phono and the turn-table is connected. Everything appears to be grounded. I wonder if the problem could be in the house wiring?
I've ran out of ideas, any suggestions.

Thanks

Answer
Dear Steve,

If the problem were the house wiring, you'd hear the same buzz no matter what sound source you used. Is that the case?

Otherwise, my guess is that you have a faulty connection somewhere in your turntable. Have you changed the cartridge recently? If any one of the four leads from the cartridge to the tone arm is loose, you would get a "buzzing" sound.

There's a remote chance that the "PHONO" section of your preamplifier is acting up, but I'd check out the turntable's wiring first.

Good luck. And thanks for choosing allexperts.com!

Kindest regards,
