Audio Systems: Connecting an amplifier to AV receiver, rca cable, home theater system

Question
I have a home theater system (5.1) and have added 3 sets of speakers outside the viewing area (yard, kitchen and dining room). I have an amplifier to power these extra speakers. I don't seem to get the connection from the amplifier to the AV receiver correctly. Any advice will be appreciated.

Answer
Your amp probably has a "tape out" or "cd out"  you can connect that to your amp w/an rca cable.  With this set up what ever is playing in the main room will be playing in the other rooms.  The only way to listen to two different sources is if your amp has a multi-room function.  You also must install a volume control otherwise these speakers will be blaring and you will have no way to turn it down.  If cutting holes in your wall and installing the volume control is too much of a task, a desktop volume control will be a life saver.
