Audio Systems: 99 Jeep Infinity 10-disc cd changer problem, jeep grand cherokee, jeep grand cherokee limited

Question
The Infinity 10-disc cd changer in my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited won't play any discs.  Previously, the unit occassionally "skipped" or sometimes would not initialize a track, but now I get an "Err" message on the in-dash display for any disc I try to play. Also, I noticed that on those occassions when I was able to play a disc, the player would fail to play the next or previous disc.

After-market shops I've called will be glad to sell me a new unit, but I haven't been able to find anyone in the Kansas City, Missouri area (other than a Jeep dealer) who will repair it, and the dealership only says they'll have to "send it out".

I have some electronics skills but have never worked on a cd player. Can you suggest some measures I can take (such as cleaning the laser lens, and how that's done) before resorting to what will undoubtedly be a very costly dealership repair, or can you recommend a reliable repair facility?  Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Answer
Dennis,
To clean the laser lens you will need to take all the covers of the CD changer unit. You may be able to clean the lens with the magazine out of the changer, if you use a long QTip. Slightly dampen the Qtip with rubbing alcohol and gently rub the lens to remove any dirt/dust on it. If cleaning doesn't help, you will need to have the Changer sent out for repair. You can try searching on the WWW for repair shops.
