I installed a Kenwood in dash mp3 cd player for my 1999 Lincoln Town car with the premium stereo system. I had to order a special harness since my existing stereo cam with an amplifier and a subwoofer. The problem is that at high volume the noise flickers, especially when the song has alot of bass tones. It sounds like the cd is skipping. What can I do?

Billy,
The problem may be due to a mismatch between the stereo and the premium amp. You may need to add an attenuator between the stereo and the premium amp. If you still have the factory stereo, give me the complete model number off the sticker on it. I can look up exactly what kind of premium system the Town car has in it.

Hey Tom,

Thank you very much for your response. This is the model number from the sticker on the back.

Is the attenuator something I can install myself?

Billy,
I looked over the service manual and the system is a premium system with an external amp as you already know! You will most likely need an attenuator between the Kenwood stereo and the input wires to the adapter connector. The problem seems to be that the audio from the kenwood stereo is slightly over driving the factory amp at higher volume levels causing distortion. Are you using any kind of speaker to line level matching unit right now, or are you using speaker level outputs connected directly to the adapter connector?

Hey Tom,
I did not do the install myself, had a retail store do it. I assume that the speakers are connected directly to the adaptor. The person at the retail store said the same thing. He mentioned that the in dash unit that came with the car had no wattage, basically just a signal going thru, and the amplifier was powering the whole unit. By installing an in dash player with wattage, such as the unit I purchased (The unit I purchased has 50watts per 4 channels), the additional wattage is causing the amplifier to feedback, thus causing the skipping. However he didn't know how to fix the problem and did not mention the attenuator at all. Is the attenuator something I can install myself?

Billy

Answer
Billy,
You should be able to purchase an attenuator at any good car stereo outlet. An adjustable unit would be the best on to use so you can set it to just the right amount of attenuation without lowering the level to the amp more than needed. These attenuators are easy to install and adjust.
