Audio Systems: escort speakers, rms output, size speakers

Question
hi Tom

i am replacing the stereo in my 1990 escort van. i am putting in a sony XR CA370X headunit with an output of 4 x 45w. i want to replace the door speakers but am not sure what size will fit or what power my speakers should be.

thanks

Les

Answer
Les,
The best way to find out what size speakers will fit is to remove the original speakers and measure them. You can always install slightly larger speakers in the doors by cutting out the holes in the metal door panels. The power/wattage of the new speakers should not be more than double the RMS output of the new stereo. If you install a speaker of 200-250 watts, the new stereo won't be able to drive the speakers correctly.
