Audio Systems: cant control volume, pontiac grand am, new radio

Question
I have a 97 Pontiac Grand Am with a Delco Pontiac radio/cd player in it. I bought the car from a private owner and I am assuming that the radio that is in it came with it. Soon after I got it, I noticed the volume control didn't work correctly, but everything else worked fine. I would try to turn my radio down and the volume would go up and if I kept turning it down, the volume would flucuate by getting softer a little bit and then louder. If I played with it enough, I was able to get it to turn down, but now it won't turn down at all. It just keeps getting louder as I try to turn it down and it is so loud right now that I would hurt my ears if it was on. If I try turning it up, it does the same things. It will usually get louder, but it might get a notch or two softer before getting louder again. Do you think it is a bad connection somewhere or do I need to invest in a new radio?

Thanks,
Marie

Answer
Marie,
In many of these stereos I find partually shorted contacts for the volume control. Please give me the complete model number of your stereo, you will have to pull the stereo out of the dash to see the sticker on the stereo.
