Audio Systems: sub-woofer, google search, inch speakers

Question
Can you tell me what the difference is between a woofer and a sub-woofer is? Also how you can tell the difference if any.I have a pair of 700 watt 15 inch speakers but can't get alot of bass even if I just hook up 1 to my amp. I have a 640 watt amp. I've got the amp on low pass but still not alot of bass. Thank You for any help.

Answer
David,

You might try a google search for those two topics :)
But...  'Sonic' refers to the range of tones most people can hear or 20-20,000 hz.

Subwoofer means subsonic (or lower than the ears' threshold can hear) Or below 20hz.

A woofer is simple a bass speaker for lower than midrange tines (generally 20-350 hz).

The boom/audio industry has blurred these two woofer categories very effectively :(  Meaning that to some people, low bass is 40 hz (hek, to some people that have never heard of low bass.. 100hz seem low to them)
...but true subsonics are always below the ears' range.

Three things needed for low end.
You need an amp..  a speaker and most importantly, a well designed enclosure that matches the speakers' needs and the listeners' wants.
You did not mention any type of enclosure, so I presume that this is your problem.

*With no box (and 700 watts hooked to it), your speaker could easily be damaged beyond repair from NOT having it in a proper enclosure.
My system used 5 way amplification
subs 18-40 hz
midbass (woofers) 55-350hz
midrange 350-1500hz
highs  1500-3500
super tweets  from 3500 on up

I think we are far enough off the topic of repair here:)

Good luck and thanks for the question.
