Audio Systems: Amplifiers & Subs?, sony cdx, internal amplifier

Question
Thanks for the quick reply Tom..

I had just written to you about 2 pages of something else I was thinking about and just erased it because I came to my own comclusion, maybe you can affirm that a 1994 Camaro's subwoofer in the hatch area has power coming to it from the car itself, to an internal amplifier? I figure it's gotta be, because radio on/off, u can still hear the juice flowing to this thing... u know, that annoying electrical distorted buzzing/humming? -- Can that be fixed? --

(that wasn't really the question)

What I'm more interested in learning is... for this Kicker Bazooka tube..
What do you reccomend for an amplifier? It's not very powerful, I just want a little extra bass for my Rolling Stones & Beatles collections-- I'm not pumping a ton of Techno or Rap music into it--

I know some people won't reccomend certain brands over others, it's just their policy or whatever (I see that often on AllExperts) -- and if not, that's okay, but how about a recommended RMS wattage? The speaker itself has no ratings written on it, peak nor RMS... but as the expert I'm sure you'd know what you would use-

I've got a Sony CDX-M8800 coming soon, (I found one for 227 after shipping-- if u want info check out techronics.com -- cheap, I saved 112 and their customer support is excellent) -- MSRP $350 -- I see "T&D Electronics" could you tell me how much sony lets these things go for to dealers? I'm curious... 112 less than MSRP they must be taking a loss?--

ANYHOO--
SONY as we know puts out 23.2 or so RMS
Woofer we have no idea what it is
Amplifier, something small cheap? You think maybe a 40W RMS or so? I figure it should cost me under 75 bucks being all amps are now rediculous ranges of 1400W and all.

thanks

-Pete

Question -
I have an old Kicker bazooka-stlye tube from.... say... 1996..

It's a 10" Sub, and I believe it has an amp inside of it......copper coiled-wire and some circuitry mean amp to me, not a high/low filter of any sort, if my knowledge serves me correct.

Anyway, most car stereos, or what I'm getting, Sony's CDX-M8800 use RCA jacks to goto subs... if you don't have an amp to plug RCA's into, then.... how do u hook up ur woofer if it has its own amp?

My sub hooks up with standard speaker wire, not rca.

Answer -
Pete,
Unless you have to supply 12 volts to the kicker bazooka tube, it isn't an amp. The circuits that you see are the cross over filters. A stereo with RCA jacks will need an amp to function and to drive the speakers.

Answer
Pete,
The factory amp/speaker units in your 94Camaro may be Bose amps and these do have 12 volts to them for power. A common problem with these amps is that capacitors on the amp boards will become leaky and the amp will make all kinds of strange noises in the speaker. As for installing amps in your vehicle, all you should need for a decent sound is about a 50-75 watt amp.
