Audio Systems: PT Cruiser radio/cd, chrysler service, aftermarket stereo

Question
Radio in 01 Cruiser cut out and the two lights on the base and treble toggles began to flash.  Chrysler service dept charged me $45 to tell me what I already knew and suggested that I replace it with a $300 reconditioned unit or a new $700 unit.

I disconnected the battery and reconnected and the radio worked as normal until I shut the car off.  It  cut out again and comes on intermittently.  The on/off/volume knob does not seem to be working as it should.  Could this be the problem?

I'm considering replacing the radio with an aftermarket one.

Answer
Gene,
I see many of these PT stereos in my shop for reset problems. I also see a few with the on/off problem. Disconnecting the battery will in some cases reset the stereo and it will work OK until you turn it off with the key. It may be less costly to replace the stereo with an aftermarket stereo.
