Audio Systems: E20 error on my CD player - !997 Pontiac Sunfire GT Stock Stereo, pontiac sunfire gt, pontiac sunfire

Question
Tom,

My car stereo suddenly stopped being able to play cds. I would try and load a cd (and I have tried different cds), and it woudl hold it for a few seconds not registering, and then spit it out. Then I get the E20 error. It even does this to my cleaning cd, which doesn't help. So I did try to cleaning wioth the cleaning cd, but to no avail.

What could be the problem. And What shoudl I do to try and get this working again. Should I just try and get the stereo replaced. And is it best to go to the dealer or just buy another at an electronics superstore type place? I kinda want to stay with the stock stereo, since it seems less desirable to steal. I don't want to attract thieves.

Thanks. :)

Answer
Christina,
The laser lense may be very dirty inside the CD player assembly. If the lense is dirty it won't be able do complete a focus search, if the laser does not see the disc it won't send a spin command to the spindle to start turning. If the spindle doesn't turn the cleaner CD will not work. You will need to have some one do a manual cleaning of the laser lense.
