Audio Systems: Screeching sound from car stereo, amplifier section, moderate level

Hi. I have an '89 Sunbird. The radio made a "puck" sound for awhile and now  it makes a loud screeching sound. If the radio is left on for a couple of minutes it stops and the radio plays. It seems as though I am loosing volume, I have to play on full volume to hear at a moderate level.

Please advise.

Most likely the amplifier section is at fault. If the vehicle uses an external amp the problem could in there. The screeching noise may be due to a few failing capacitors in the audio output section.
