Audio Systems: Amplifier not working, power wires, speaker wires

I have hooked up an amplifier that I've had for several years but something is not working properly. When I turn the system on the amp comes on and plays for about 5 seconds then crackles and fades out. I've checked my power and ground. What else?

make sure all the power wires are the proper size and that none of the speaker wires are grounded to the vehicle body. Also be sure that the input level isn't up too high. If this doesn't help a fault with the amp exist, possibly corrosion if the amp was stored in a damp area.
