Audio Systems: Tv recording, hard drive recorders, soundandvisionmag

The cable and sat. companies have recorders with hard drives (DVRs) for recording tv programs. (tivo) etc.  My question is... are there any DVRs that one can buy from independent manufacturers where you do not have to pay a monthly fee.  In other words one you could use as a VCR.
