Audio Systems: Car Stereo Install, farad capacitor, installing a car stereo

Question
I want to know the basic procedure for installing a car stereo. I have installed one and I was unhappy with the results. To let you know all that i know, all I did was run the 4 guage amp wire from the battery to the subs and the rca wire from the stereo to the subs. I don't know if my amp has a crossover or not. However, I am currently trying to work out a problem with my right speaker not working. I want to know if you have any suggestions on improving my sound. I have two xtant subs, and a SPL 1200 watt amp. Where do I need to go next to improve sound, and clarity. I want a good boom, but not a distorted one. I also have a new pioneer cd reciever, but i don't know the model. I plays mp3's and it has the graphics and changer controls. Please help me and I apologize for this email's unclarity.

Answer
Courtney,

no problem .. here is a webpage i have that will help you with your sub and amps ohm rating so you can wire everything up and have the best sound you can and not damage any of your components .. you will need to get your sub and amps info on ohm rating and RMS power rating so you can make the ohm up you need ... you owners booklet for both should have the info .. if not drop an email or a phone call to their tech line from their website .. ok now i will just go over a quick guide for installing an amp and subs .. 4 gauge power wire from battery should be ran through a 30 amp inline fuse *8-10* dollars at radio shack with an extra fuse or 2 ... also since you are using a high wattage amp i highly recommnend you buy a 1 farad capacitor www.etronics.com has them for 49.95 on sale so check there .. the capacitor is kind of like a storage tank for power so when your system hits a real deep low bass note it wont drain your battery and strain your charging system ... ok you will also need a 4 gauge ground cable which needs to be mounted to your unibody/frame .. *keep this as short as possible to improve performance* .. now read your amps owners booklet so you can check to make sure it has a crossover * which it does most likly* i recommend using a 12-18 gauge speaker cables because the bigger the cable the better the performance ! .. now use the site i gave you to wire up your subs according to their ohm rating and the amps .. after you have all of this * and of course your RMS Turn on wire from your head unit * you need to get some basic adjustments on your amp .. you should have  GAIN, FREQUENCY, HI-Low-Mid Pass Crossover switch, and maybe treble and bass boost knobs on your amp.. you need to set your pass switch to LOW , adjust your fequency to around 80 , and turn your GAIN up 1/4 turn .. put in your favorite cd turn up to normal listening range and slowly turn up your gain knob until you get distortion then back it off until it stops , the fequency should be adjusted right around 80 which is a good setting for all types of music lower than 80 is good for rap and heavy bass songs , and over 80 is for metal and rock so adjust to your music taste if you want .. now this should get ya going if you need anything else just let me know

thanks
