Audio Systems: Techics stereo system, mute button, sound sources

I have recently acquired a Techics system, i.e. tuner,CD player, cassette deck, equalizer, etc.  370 watts.  My problem is that all the lights and whistles work but I don't get any sound out of the unit.  It's not the speakers.  Any suggestions?

What model is it? Have you checked that you haven't engaged the "Mute" button? Have you tried all the sound sources? How do you know/come to the conclusion that it's not the speakers? Have you tried the speakers with another receiver, etc.?

Give me some idea of what you've tried, and I'll see what I can do.
