Motorcycle Repair: 86 fxr - Oil dipstick poping out of tank, oil drains, oil tank

Question
Have 86 fxrs.  Been sitting for month or so.  When started after about a minute or two the oil dipstick will pop straight up into the air (hit me in the face first time).  Oil is about quart low.  Also, The crankcase has a tube running to the back of the bike with a little filter on it.  If the bike sits for few weeks and I start up, oil drains out of it.  Is this normal?

Answer
remove the little filter you are referring to. Its probably plugged and that will cause the dipstick to pop out.
On the oil coming out of the vent. What is happening is there is a check valve in the oil pump. It is a ball with a spring. Since the oil tank sits higher than the motor, what is happening is oil is weeping past the ball and going into the boootm end of the motor. When you start the bike the oil pump cant pump the oil back fast enough and it comes out the vent. It doenst hurt anything, just makes a mess. You can fix it by draining the oil, remove the cover over the ball and remove the spring. take a small punch and gently tap the ball and that should reseat it.
Happy holidays
