Audio Systems: 98 Ford Taurus radio noise, ford taurus, amp alternator

Question
Hello,
The problem that I am having with my 98 Taurus radio is in the AM section.
This is a relatively new development. Get lots of alternator noise on all but the stongest stations. Never had this before. FM and tape work fine.
Thanks!

Answer
Hello Joe,
Due to the operation of alternators, they tend to put out electrical noise over a wide spectrum. Most alternators will have a built in noise filter and over time because of the high temperatures under the hood, the filter will sometimes fail. When this happens the AM receiver will pick up all kinds of strange noise from the alternator. To correct this you can do one of two things. 1-install a very heavy duty filter directly on the output of the alternator that will filter out the noise (ripple)from the unit. 2-replace the alternator. Note, the noise filter has be be able to handle/carry the maximum output current from your alternator. ie, for a 60 amp alternator you should use a 60 amp or better filter! Some better car stereo install shops may have these filters, you can also find these at the large car parts outlets and at marine stores.
