Audio Systems: Ford/Mercury Factory Radio/CD, mercury mountaineer, ford mercury

I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer whose factory radio/cd player display has gone out.  It was intermittent for a long time, now is out. I gather from hints on radio repair sites that this is a common, known failure. There is a guy on E-bay offering to fix the display problem if you send the radio to him (and $50).  I am a Tv technician, and I believe I can fix the problem if I know what the fix is. Any help?

Beware of people claiming to repair the display problem for $50! I have heard some interesting stories! Please contact me by direct Email with the complete model number of your stereo. I will give you some more info about how you repair and update the power supply.
