Audio Systems: Toyota, Camry 1991 - car stereo, 1991 toyota camry, toyota camry

Question
I have recently purchased a 1991 Toyota Camry dx. Everything on the car has been kept in great condition, less the factory stereo. The stereo is an “A series” ~Fujitsu ten AM/FM –Cassette unit. The problem is like what so many other have described but the circumstances are different, thus the new question string. To the best of my knowledge no work of any kind has been done to the sound system and no changes have been made from the original factory instillation.

Problem: When you turn the car stereo on all functions/lights appear to work but no sound comes out. If you hold down a station button to add a station to memory, the beeping noise that accompanies a saved station will emit from the speakers. This tells me the speakers are still hooked up and fine. This is where I'm at a loss.

Thank you,
Isaac

Answer
Isaac,

Ok you need to do some research to see if that model of camry has a factory amplified system , i dont think it does but you should check on it.. now what it sounds like *since i dont believe you have the amp'd system* i think its the age on the head unit , very common most units wont last over 8-10 years under normal use, but we will give it a test pull the unit out , give a quick inspection of all the wiring make sure there are no cuts/broken/frayed/ or split wires and no bare wires rubbing together .. then turn on the unit while still out of the dash and wiggle the harness to see if any changes happen in sound , if its still dead , leave unit out and go to your fuse block pull each and every fuse out one at a time and check for blows check ALL fuses not just radio related ones.. then go back and try the head unit again.. if you get nothing this time, remove one of your interior speakers and either connect it to another car stereos wiring or even a home audio system will work and test to make sure the speaker will produce sound .. if it does can the old head unit and pick up a replacement .. i would recommend aftermarket because its cheaper than going back stock but its all up to you on what to spend , if you go aftermarket you will need a wire harness adapter kit and a dash install kit *8-12 bucks each* .. hope this helps you out here is a site you can browse prices on new unit www.etronics.com and i recommend going to radio shack for your dash kit and harness adapter .. if you need anything else let me know

thanks
