Audio Systems: Dodge Dakota radio repairs, volume control knob, radio repairs

Question
I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota with a single CD in dash that is not working properly. The volume control knob has a dead spot(no sound when in that spot) and the display flickers only when the headlights are on. Is there anything I can check or should it go to the dealer? I have some electronic background if I can get it out of the dash. I dont see any screws holding it in. Thanks for any help that you may be able to give me.

Answer
Ken,
Most likely the volume control is dirty inside and a light spray of switch and control cleaner should do the trick. As for the display flickering, this may be due to a faulty power supply for the display or the display dimming control circuits. To remove the stereo you will need to take off the trim around the stereo. I don't know how to remove the trim on this year, however on a 2002 model the plastic cover under the steering wheel has to be removed and remove one screw located near the passenger air bag switch. After this the trim around the stereo snaps/pulls away from the dash. You may want to contact your local dealer and ask the service shop how to remove the radio.
