Audio Systems: Sony Home stereo system.... CD player, home stereo system, compact disc player

Question
Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your reply.
re: Generally, when a CD player won't recognize a CD, it's not reading the boot area of the CD. This is either a laser alignment issue or a programming issue.'

I was wondering if there could be any relationship to "inserting" audio to a video track which was one of the last times I played the CDs. This was very recent. I don't see a connection, but I am not an expert.
Also, you said "Generally" ... what could be another non-general possibility? Could dust/dirt be a cause? If laser alignment or programming is the cause, do you know what to do? I am comfortable following technical troubleshooting/repair steps. I do not have the money to replace or repair the unit.

Thank you for your time!
Rick

Problem:
doesn't recognize that I have a cd inside. I have all 5 discs in cd tray. I try to play any CD and it skips each CD, then says there are no cds in tray... however, all 5 are in tray.
This problem began recently. Thank you.

Answer
Dear Rick,

I use the word "generally" because misalignment and programming loss are the two most common causes. Anything with moving parts (transport door or tray misalignment; motor malfunction; motor belt out of adjustment) can have anything go wrong. That's the first reason I directed to to a qualified technician: they'll know from experience with your model and similar Sony units what to look for first.

Dust and dirt will cause misreading and skipping, but I've never cured a "cannot read" issue with a cleaner.

The second reason I directed you to a qualified technician is because I NEVER recommend that untrained, tho' gifted, amateurs work with laser instruments. They are dangerous and can cause serious injury. I am not a technician. I take my malfunctioning CD/DVD players to the shop.

Kindest regards,

Kevin
