Audio Systems: Factory Auto AM/FM Stereo/Cassette/ CD, jeep grand cherokee, antenna connection

Question
I own a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a factory
AM-FM Stereo Cassette/CD Player.  Suddenly the
FM reception dropped out, when it does come in it is
very weak. AM will work but reception is not
very good.  I have checked the antenna connection and it seems to be OK.
The CD will not start in cold weather, but works fine when warmed up inside or in mild weather.
Is it worth sending it off to get fixed or would it be better to buy a aftermarket system?  Tnx  jb

Answer
Hello John,
With most factory CD stereos if the CD unit is having problems the best way to go is to have the CD unit inside the stereo replaced. As for the weak reception the only sure way to test the original antenna is to purchase a cheap antenna from Walmart and plug it into the antenna input on the stereo to see if reception improves. Finally, it may be better to have your original stereo repaired VS purchasing an aftermarket stereo, however thats up to you and how well you like or dislike the factory stereo.
