Audio Systems: No power to radio after installing an aftermarket unit, sony cdx, wire nuts

Question
Hi,

Thanks for the fast response. I checked the car's wires with a voltmeter. The ignition wire has 12V, but the battery wire only has 4V. Could this be the problem? and is there a way to fix it? Also I connected the wires from the unit to the wiring harness using wire nuts, which I've gone over a few times now to make sure the connections are good. Any thoughts. Thanks again.

Hi,

I have a 1996 Honda Civic. I got tired of the radio unit that the previous owner had and decided to installing the CD player form my last car. The unit I installed is a Sony CDX C708. Right as I finished the install and was sliding the unit in, the power went dead. I checked all the connections and replaced the fuses in the car and in the back of the unit. Still no power. I also tried to reconnect the old radio, but still no power. One mistake I did make was while fumbling in the dash to hook up the connections, I put the antenna cable from the car into the remote in on the player. This seemed to reset the player, but it didn't lose power till a while afterward. Does this sound like a problem with the car's electrical or is there a quick fix. I apperciate the help. Thanks.

Josh,
You should use a volt meter to measure the DC voltage on the hot lead and the ignition lead with the key on. If you do not have a volt meter you can use a test light. Also how did you connect the wires, I have found that in many DIY installs the owner will use electrical tape to connect the wires.

Answer
Josh,
For the stereo to work you will need 12 volts on both wires. Check the fuse block for a blown fuse. also look in the area where the radio goes to see if you can find a fuse holder back there. Wire nuts are good to use, however you should use electrical tape on the wire nuts and onto the wires. I have seen wire nuts come loose due to vibration in the car.
