Audio Systems: no music, mitsubishi galant, fuse block

Question
please help me with a problem i am having.  i drive a 1996 mitsubishi galant and my stereo is on but no music comes out.  just wondering what the problem was with it.  when this happened i was pushing the volume to go up and someone else was pushing the button to make the volume go down, if that's any help. it is a jvc stereo cd/am/fm and did not come with the car it is detachable.  thank you so much for your time.

Answer
April,

more than likly the unit has shorted out but that is the worst case, pull the unit out of the dash and check to make sure the harness plug and all the wiring is neat and insulated and everything is plugged in tight, also go to your fuse block and check all the fuses one at a time not just the radio fuses ... second i would remove one of the speakers *whichever is easiest* and wire it into even a home stereo sytem just to check if it produces sound if it does then its the head unit a simple swap out to a new unit should cure your problems .. if the speaker doesnt produce sound take a speaker from the home system if you dont have a car speaker that you know works and wire it into the spot of the factory speaker if it works then you need to replace the speakers just simple detective work will help you trace down the problem i hope this helps you out if you need anything else let me know

thanks
