Subaru Repair: 98 outback 95000miles, head gaskets, head gasket

Question
I have been diagnosed with leaky head gaskets after intermittent mysterious overheating problems - I am now learning that this is not uncommon with these Phase 1 2.5's - should I bother to fix it? I don't want to spend 2000 on a crap engine - buy a new engine??? I am really depressed as a 35000 car should be reliable

Answer
The 1st generation 2.5l had some head gasket issues for sure. But it doesn't make the whole design bad just one aspect of it that has been addressed by Subaru with updated headgaskets. If you like the car then consider fixing it. If you don't than dont. But know this All Cars have issues ,there is a cost of ownership .In my opinion the safety features of the Subaru far out way the repairs.
