Audio Systems: infinity car stereo repair 1992 dodge grand caravan, dodge grand caravan, car stereo repair

Question

Can you give me an estimate of the price for an  amp and installation from a place like Audio King.  Also is there any chance there is only a fuse blown in the amp?  Your help is very much appreciated.  Have a good day.  Bill Virant ------------------------

We put an alpine radio tape deck and cd player combo in our 1992 dodge grand caravan  and a 10' sub with an amp to drive the sub.   Shortly after the install, the bass part the rear factory installed van speakers  quit, so now we only have lots of treble.   We decided to take out the Alpine speaker and sub (teen ager growing up), and reinstall the infinity radio and tape deck combo and now the  infinity radio has power as indicated by a station tuned in on the LCD radio screen but only rarely does any sound come through any speaker.  If the speakers work it is usually when the radio is first turned on, and then it quits until the van is turned on at a later date.  One would think the infinity radio to be bad, but it works fine in our speed boat so we are  thinking perhaps the  plug connecting radio to the speakers is the problem.  we are also told there may be an "after amp"  - factory installed that is  blown and thus causing bass in rear speakers  to not work.  bottom line: we'd like original infinity radio to be   working in our   van.  Can you please help.  Thanks  for listening and thanks in advance for any help you can give.   Have a good day.  Bill Virant

Bill,

well the person who said there is an factory amp is right .. all infinity systems have a factory installed amp that powers the OEM speakers and most commonly if not the total speaker package but the rear speakers mainly so that explains your problem .. now the cure without a major rip out and reinstall would be buy a new factory amp and swap out .. i would recommend taking to a shop because a factory amp system is a little differnt from a normal stock setup and requires more knowledge and resources for information on diagrams .. i hope this helps you out if i missed anything or you need anything else let me know

thanks

Answer
Bill ,

i'm pretty sure there will be an fuse on the amp that you can check on the side with the harness normally a 10-20 amp fuse ... about the install buying a factory amp wont come cheap but a shop can install an aftermarket and still make it function as stock for maybe even less money i would estimate atleast 150 for an amp could be cheaper i'm just giving the medium , also most techs are atleast 15-20 an hour cheaper than an auto mechanic but prices vary on how good they are , location , ect.. now what i would do before having this replaced is buy/rent a haynes repair manual for your specfic van you can pick up one at auto parts store for 10-15 bucks or try the liabary to save some bucks .. once you have it you can check all your wiring and fuses at the amp and then i would try surfing around for a used amp that works try ebay for one for your car i say you can find one and save you some money and still have your sound back .. if you need anything else let me know

thanks
