Audio Systems: may have shorted the 12volt ignition wire, fuse block, ford escort

Question
So i was installing a cd player in my sisters car for the first time.  and needless to say i was doing the work without an installation kit or harness.  im very used to splicing wires etc, but as i was working with the 12 volt ignition wire on her 94 ford escort...the wire popped and sparked at me.  this was the wire coming from the escort, the blue w/red stripe wire? i cant remember which color, but im positive it was the ignition wire because i have it attached to the red wire coming from the cd player.  did i do something horrible here, or maybe just blow a fuse?

Answer
Dave,

you should always use a harness adapter its the best 10 bucks you can spend it makes an install a whole lot easier, neat and professional .. but i would say your problem will be in the fuse so check all the fuses in the fuse block not just the stereo fuses and especially the 12volt accessory fuse .. hope this helps you out if you need anything else let me know

thanks
