Dear whunter,  

My Mercedes is a 1995 C280. I know that is not your area, but with your credentials, what wouldn't be your area?

The engine cuts off sometimes when I put it in reverse and then push on the gas pedal. It only began to happen this morning and has done it more often when the front end is lower than the rear on a slight incline. It doesn't do this everytime I try to back up.

Do you have an educated guess?

I would need at least an 1 - 3 hours hands on diagnostic time for a solid answer.
Many other issues are possible; but here are some guesses:
#1. Overload Relay.
#2. Fuel Pump Relay.
#3. Transmission issue.

Best advice:
Take it to your local dealer for diagnosis.
