Audio Systems: Car CD/radio problem, 2001 daewoo lanos, daewoo lanos

Question
Hi Tom, we have 2001 Daewoo Lanos with a Philips car CD/radio, model RC600.

Problem -  radio turns itself on or stays off when it wants to regardless of whether the ignition is turned on or not.

Turning the ignition on does not start the radio, it can not be turned on by pressing the on/off button on the radio.

Whilst driving the car the CD/radio will turn itself on or off at random.

The CD/radio will turn itself on even though the ignition key is removed and there is no one in or near the car.

The light behind the on/off switch is permanently on.

Please can you advise the solution ?

Answer
Hello Carole,
With the light always on by the on/off switch it tells me that the power control transistor may be shorted. This transistor is switched on to show the clock when you press the display button when the key is off. I have also found in these radios that defective solder connections between the main board and the front display connector will make the radio do strange things. A quick touch up with a low wattage soldering iron on the connections should fix the problem connections.
