Audio Systems: cd player problem, mitsubishi car, lindsay ok

Question
-------------------------
Hi Cody:
Yesterday I used compressed air in the cd player and when that didn't work, I went to Wal-Mart and bought the cd lens cleaning disc (with the brushes) and that didn't work either. It would take it in, saying Track 1, and then the "E" message and out it comes.

The owner's manual didn't come with the car so I can't look up what the "E" means, probably Eject or Error.  Any further suggestions or does it need to be replaced or taken to a professional?  I was quoted $80.00 by one place to take it out and clean it, or possibly sending it off to be fixed.  What do you think?
Thanks so much.
Lindsay

Cody-
Thanks so much for the info.  Is there any chance that the cleaning cd would get stuck inside the player?
Also, the humming noise you were talking about...is that when the cd is in the player, or as it is going in, or upon ejection?
By the way, when I put a cd in, it lights up as "Track 1" and then shows an "E" and then ejects it.
Any additional info. would help.  Thanks so much.

Sincerely,
Lindsay

The cd player in my Mitsubishi car recently started ejecting cd's before it would play them.  It used to work fine.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!!

Lindsay,

ok if the unit is a factory unit sometimes they wont play CD-R's and will give an error and kick out the cd .. but if the unit does it on all types of cds i would recommend cleaning the lens with a cd lens cleaner disc you can pick one up at wal-mart for under 10 dollars .. give it a try and see if it will let you clean the lens if it wont take a can of compressed air * such as duster for computers* and blow in the opening to try and clean the lens off then try the lens cleaner .. now if none of this works and you get a low humm noise it could be your cd player's moter and the only cure is a swap out of head units .. if you do decide on an aftermarket swap be sure to buy a harness adapter to wire everything up .. i hope this helps you out if you need anything else let me know

thanks

Lindsay,

hi no problem glad to help i said before about burnt cd's i have 4 or 5 cds that i cant play even in my aftermarket unit because it stops at track one and ejects if it happens with normal cds then its a "general" problem that effects everything but if not it could just not like CDR's .. the humm i was talking about is a normal symptom that happens as the cd gets spun for the short time if it sounds bad it normally is bad but eject sound is normal .. ok the "E" you get go to your owners manual and read the section on your stereo to see what if any information is available on what it stands for then go from there on fixing the problem .. now if your book has no info that helps you call your customer assistance line its an 800 number in the back and ask them about the code they can get you an answer in a few minutes .. about the cd cleaner its rare that it would get stuck but it can happen try your best to see what the code means before doing it .. if the code has a specific like motor/laser/lens ect.. its time to hunk it in the can but if its a loose term just meaning error i would try the air clean then use the cd cleaner to see if that can get you fixed if not then i would toss it and get a new aftermarket because if you do get this one going it has potential to die very soon and eat cd's .. hope this helps you out let me know if you need anything else

thanks

Answer
Lindsay,

80 dollars shew the nerve of some shops .. you can buy a cheaper grade aftermarket cd player , the harness and dash kit for 80-90 and have a new cd player .. since you dont have the owners manual and the compressed air and lens cleaner didnt work i would lay my money on the idea of the motor/laser is weak or bad and rather than paying 80 bucks with no promise of it working i would stop by wal-mart or order a new unit off the internet i use etronics.com to buy most all of my electronics they have great selection and excellent prices .. just make sure no matter where you buy your head unit at go by radio shack and buy a wire harness adapter and a dash install kit for your specific car ask the salesperson and they will get you what you need they are 8-12 dollars each ... sorry i couldnt get you going but maybe this will give you a good guide to put the sound back in your car .. if you need anything please let me know

thanks
