Audi Repair: A4 heater problem, temperature guage, coolant level

Im working on a 97 A4 Avant 2.8.No heat coming out of the vents. The fan blows only cold air,even on Hi.Both hoses seem to get hot going into the firewall.I'm getting a flashing red Temp light,but the temperature guage is normal.Got any Ideas? Thanks,Tom

The flashing red temp light is usually low coolant.  CHeck the coolant level switch and connections in the expansion tank.  The fact you are getting no heat, even though the hoses are getting warm, is probably one of the actuators on the heater box is not working.  The heat has to be allowed into the car, and there is usually a large flap that regulates that.  Sounds like the flap is stuck closed, they sometimes stick when the foam seal gets older.  Unfortunately it is very difficult to get close to these things without taking significant amounts of dashboard/facia out I would start by removing the lower dash panel on the driver's side and see if you can get access.  Let me know,  Jan
