Audi Repair: Audi A6 Turbo Converter, torque converter, catalytic converters

Question
I recently took my Audi into a shop and they said it would be $3000+ to fix the "turbo converter."  Is this a part I can go to a pick'n'pull or something, obtain a working part, and have installed instead of paying so much for a brand new one?  Thanks

Answer
I imagine this is either the catalytic converter or the torque converter.  The torque converter connects the drive from the engine to the transmission, the catalytic converters are in the exhaust system and are used to monitor the engine tune on modern Audi's.  Either way it may well be worth getting the parts used, but first find out how much of your estimate is labor, and how much is parts.  Let me know,  Jan
