Audi Repair: Transmission, audi cabriolet, filter change

Question
I have a 1997 audi cabriolet.I'm not sure but I think I might be having a transmission sensor problem.I just had the fluid and filter changed. The mechanic told me there were no shavings in the pan. When the car is cold it does'nt seem to be able to find first and second gear, after a mile or two of driving the car it shifts fine.I also noticed that if I'm on a back road doing 40 miles an hour and go into a turn instead of shifting down to second gear the car shifts up into 4th gear which makes me think the car is not locating the gears properly. What do you think this problem could be?

Answer
Transmissions on 1996-1997 Audi Cabriolets are notoriously weak.  You may be lucky and get away with an oil and filter change, but chances are the transmission is failing.  It is common for the problem to be worse when the car is cold.  Try the oil and filter change first.  Let me know,  Jan
