Audi Repair: 00 Audi A6 4.2 Hesitation, stalls, and smoke, throttle position sensor, bosch fuel pump

Question
Thank you for taking the time to review my question.  My 2001 A6 4.2 Hesitates on take off,has difficulty idling following decelaration, stalls on decelaration, smokes on take off and during irregular idle. The severity of the issues increases as the fuel level becomes lower.  The check engine light persists with fault codes reading missfire.  I changed the oil last night and drained at least 2 quarts less than prior changes.  I run premium fuel (92 octane 10% ethanol) and use only quality parts.  I bust my own nuckles on this car and have enjoyed many Audi's over the years.  My vote goes to a new Bosch fuel pump.  What do you think?

Thank you

Answer
Hi Travis,

I don't see how the fuel pump can cause oil consumption.  I would see if the missfire code is consistent with any one of the coil packs, and then change that coil pack.  Also if the car smokes under acceleration, then in all likelihood you have worn rings, or gummed rings.  If it smokes under deceleration it is more likely to be valve seals.  If the running problem does get worse with less fuel in the tank, then there may be a fuel pressure issue but I would check the pressure before changing the pump.  Also check the throttle position sensor and mass airflow sensor for proper functionality, as this can give idling problems too.  Let me know what uoi find,  Jan
