Audi Repair: DASH CLUSTER LIGHT OUT, audi cabriolet, reccommendation

Question
My wife's car a 1997 Audi cabriolet . It has 89K on it. The other week the ignition switch seemed to be binding. I did not want her to get stuck. We brought it in to the mechanic
he changed both the key lock and electrical switch. When I picked the car up the car started ,however the after market raio did not get power. At first the mechanic related the radio blew unrelated to his repair. I purchased a new radio , it did not get power, and the old radio worked[when hooked up to an external source. Back and forth to mechanic.
finally they either wired the ignition swich wrong or bad switch. Last night [one day after getting the car back] The internal light illuminating the tach and speedometer was out.The tach , speedo, everything else seemed to work. I tried to turn the nob to adjust illumination did not work .
Thank You, I would appreciate any help and possibly a reccommendation for a new  mechanic. I am in Southern Cal

Answer
There is a small pin in the back of the key switch that a lot of mechanics drop when exchanging the electrical switch, which will stop accessories from working.  Your mechanic needs replacing, not your radio.  I am in Ohio, so sorry I cannot help with recommendations in Southern Cal, but a comment on the forums usually gets replies.  Beware of garages who snoop around on the forums with falsified information regarding quality etc, only try a garage if recommended by different posters who post on other issues too.  The lights in the back of the cluster could be due to a bad or loose connection, or simply some bulbs.  Unlikely for more than one of these to go at once, though.  Let me know,  Jan
