Audi Repair: REPAIR TORQUE CONVERTER?, dooms day, 2002 audi a4

Question
I had been asking you questions about my transmission problems. I have taken my 2002 Audi A4 3.0 to a local shop that only works on foreign cars. According to him, they can send out my torque converter to a place that will repair my torque converter... saving me a huge amount. Is it possible to repair this part?

Answer
Hi Abe,

to my knowledge I have never heard of a torque converter being repaired, the the whole part is welded together with all the important bits inside the whole housing and then the whole unit has to be perfectly balanced or else it will cause vibration/s when rotating especially at high speed.

That said, it is a fully mechanical part and in theory if some one has the knowledge and tools required to carry out repairs then I suppose it is possible.

If it were me then I'd do the same thing I do if i am referred to a doctor, find out more information that I can, talk to other people who have had the procedure done get their opinions on the subject, then talk to the 'doc' himself, does he know(or sound like he knows) what he is talking about?? can he explain the to you the problem and effect of the problem on your car,and can he explain it to you in simple terms for you to understand, if he doesnt know what he is talking about then he will throw in technical jargon to confuse you. is he the 'dooms day' kind of mechanic, beware of these kind, they normally use scare tactics to get you to do un-neccessary work. what kind of guarantee is he offering?? how much will he charge? does he repair entire gearbox units(might be cheaper and easier to take whole thing to him so anything gearbox related can be sorted at once. also have a look at his workshop, you can get a preety good idea of the craftsman behind the operation by the state of the workshop. a clean workshop with everything on its place shows some one who pays attention to detail and takes pride in his work, while a messy one shows one who does the work just for the sake of it, which might mean he will do the same to your car!!

so bottom line get all the information you need before making any decisions, it takes longer but you'll be happier in the end.
