Audi Repair: 2002 A6 -- trunk will not latch, seal area, bungee cord

Question
I opened my trunk, and now the latch will not engage when I drop the lid.  I've tried turning the car on and then off. I've tried the remote controls to lock/unlock.  And I've tried the key in the manual slot.  All of these efforts seem to trigger something in the locking system; however the lid does not latch when I drop it into place.
Suggestions to solve the problem of unlatched trunk lid?
Current solution is a bungee cord -- seems like a tacky advertisement of a problem on an Audi!  Thanks,Clay

Answer
If there is no foreign objects in the seal area, and the trunk goes all the way down where it used to latch, then there is an internal problem with the lock itself.  This can be tricky to work on, sometimes it just sticks and needs some lubrication, so try some WD40 to see if that frees it up.  If not you will have to get to the mechanism, which is inside the trunk lid. Let me know what you find,  Jan
