GM-GMC: 1999 Chevy Tahoe Windows, chevy tahoe, cutting torch

Question
Dean,
I have a 1999 Chevy Tahoe 4x4.  The back windows only open about 4 inches.  The dealer tells me they're child safety windows.  I don't have any children and I'd like for them to open all the way like they did in earlier years.  Any way to bypass this?

Answer
David - Sure you can bypass them.  Get your cutting torch out and away you go! <g>

Seriously, where do these dealers get this stuff?  Sounds good - child safety.  The reason is, if you sit back away from your truck, and look at it with a side view, you will see that the bottom of the rear doors are scalloped so that they do not intrude into the rear wheels.  They are shaped so that the rear wheel housing and the door match.  The windows only go down so far because of the shape of the door.  If this were a Suburban, you would see that the rear doors are completely rectangular, leaving room for the windows to go completely down, and they, in fact, do.

Unless you had a weirdly shaped window or a bigger door, there just isn't room for the window to go completely down.  It runs into the "scallop".

Have a great holiday!
