Audi Repair: Electrical problem with headlights, electricity flow, high beams

Question
I have a 1996 Audi A4 2.8l V6 i have had the same problem with my headlights for a while and i would always fix them by removing the combination switch and sanding the small plastic piece the would melt and hold the cooper piece and would not let the electricity flow to the headlights. I got a new piece made and it works somewhat my headlights wont turn on but i can click my high beams on before i would have to hold them on, this i would think means that the plastic piece is working and something else is wrong.  I don't know if the headlights have a relay i found all the relays but i don't know whats what.  Thanks

Answer
It sounds like the switch is not working correctly.  There is no relay for the headlights, and each side is on a seperate fuse.  Are you running the stock headlight bulbs?  Somehow you are drawing too much current if it is melting the switch.  Are all the connections solid?  Do not put a relay in the headlamp circuit as this is unsafe; you can only use relays in auxilliary light circuits.  Let me know,  Jan
