Audi Repair: Audi A6 Advant 2.4estate 2002, turn signal switch, flasher units

Question
QUESTION: The car has developed a fault with the indicators. After cancelling the indicators the flasher units continues to click intermittently. I have changed the hazard switch which houses the relays and this has not fixed the problem. I have also noticed that the windscreen wipers and electric windows operate very slowly. I suspected a battery fault but this has been checked for voltage and capacity and seems fine. Any help would be most appreciated.

ANSWER: It sounds like a possible short or bad contact in the turn signal switch.  These switches can be temperamental, but can be overhauled and checked. Check that all the connections are tight to that switch, and that good contact is made between the switch halves.  In order to remove it, it does mean the steering wheel has to be removed, which includes airbag removal that takes extra care.  If all things are moving slowly, it could be that the load reduction relay is not passing enough current, so check the load reduction relay too.  The load reduction relay disables some electrics in the car when the starter motor is enabled.

QUESTION: Many thanks for your prompt reply. Can you advise where the load reduction relay is located.

Once again many thanks.

Answer
I think on the A6 the load reduction relay is located under the dash, but I am not 100% positive.  Check for a relay that is activated when you start the engine.  If you put your hand on a relay you can normally feel if it is activated, normally you can also hear them click but in this case the clicking is probably drowned out by the starter...  If you remove the lower dash panel you should be able to see the relays.  Let me know if you cannot find it, it may also be described in your manual.  Good Luck,  Jan
